1. shelley의 생애
영국의 낭만 시인. 부유한 지주이자 준남작의 큰아들로 태어나 명문 이튼 학교를 거쳐 옥스퍼드의 유니버시티 칼리지에 들어가 공부하며 사회적 엘리트로서 성장하였다.
그는 자기중심적이며 자신에 찬 젊은이로써 철학을 사랑하고 정통성을 경멸하여 재학 도중 18세의 나이로 급진적 사상을 담은 팸플릿 <무신론의 필요성 The Necessity of Atheism>을 출판하는 말썽을 일으켜 퇴학 처분을 받는다.
그 후 19세까지 5권의 책을 출간하고 1811년 19세의 나이로 16세의 신부인 해리엇 웨스트브룩(Harriet Westbrook)을 만나 결혼한다.
하지만 셸리는 곧 그의 지적 스승이었던 철학자 윌리엄 고드윈(William Godwin)과 여권옹호자 메리 울스턴크래프트(Mary Wollstonecraft)을 만나고 이들의 딸인 16세 소녀 메리(Mary Godwin)를 사랑하게 된다. 사랑 없는 결혼 생활은 부도덕이라는 자신의 신념에 따라 1814년 Shelly는 Herriet을 버리고 Marry와 France로 도피행각을 벌인다. Herriet은 하이드 파크의 서펀타인 호수에서 임신한 채로 빠져 자살하고 셸리는 주변사람들에게 무신론자, 혁명뿐만 아니라 추악한 배신자로서 여겨지게 된다.
셸리는 1816년에 메리와 결혼하여 템스 강 상류의 작은 마을에 정착. 1818년에서 1819년 동안 9개월도 못되는 사이에 Shelley와 Marry 사이에서 난 귀여운 아이들 2명을 잃는다. 이곳에서 셸리의 아내 메리는 유명한 <프랑켄슈타인 Frankenstein>(1818) 등을 쓴다.
이처럼 자포자기적인 상황에서, 때로는 거의 절망적인 상태에서, 그리고 자신에게는 이제 독자가 거의 없다는 것을 알면서도 Shelley는 그의 가장 훌륭한 작품들을 써나갔다.
