She was a Phantom of delight
When first she gleamed upon my sight;
A lovely Apparition, ; sent
To be a moment's ornament ;
Her eyes as stars of twilight fair ;
Like twilight's, too her dusky hair ;
But all things else about her drawn
From Mary-time and the cheerful Dawn;
A dancing shape, an image gay,
To haunt, to startle, and way-lay.
그녀는 기쁨의 화신이었다.
맨 처음 그녀를 만났을 때 그랬다;
사랑스런 화신 이었다;
순간을 장식하러 파견된 화신;
그녀의 눈은 황혼의 별처럼 아름다웠고
그녀의 검은 머릿결도 역시 황혼 같았다.
그러나 그밖에 그녀에 관한 모든 것은
五月祭나 명랑한 새벽에서 얻어진 것 같았다;
춤추는 자태나. 쾌활한 모습,
갑자기 나타나서, 깜짝 놀라게 하고, 기습하는 모습들
I saw her upon nearer view,
A spirit, yet a woman too ;
Her household motions light and free,
And steps of virgin-liberty ;
A countenance in which did meet
Sweet records, promises as sweet ;
A creature not too bright or good
For human nature's daily food ;
For transient sorrows, simple wiles,
Praise, blame, love, kisses, tears and smile.
나는 그녀를 가까이 보았다.
그녀는 요정이면서도, 역시 한 여인이었다.
집안일 하는 움직임 가볍고, 자유롭고
처녀 같은 자유로운 발걸음 ;
그녀의 얼굴 속에는
아름다운 기록과 달콤한 약속이 만난다.
알맞게 적절히 빛나고 훌륭한 한 사람의 여인
그녀는 자연의 일용하는 음식에서나,
지나가는 슬픔들, 단순한 속임수들
칭찬이나 꾸중, 사랑과 입맞춤, 눈물과 미소에
훌륭히 대처했다.
And now I see with eye serene
The very pulse of the machine ;
A being breathing thoughtful breath,
A traveler between life and death:
지금 나는 고요한 눈으로 본다.
그녀의 몸에서 맥박의 고동소릴 듣는다.
생각이 깃든 호흡을 하고 있는 존재,
삶과 죽음 사이의 한 여행자를 본다.
The reason firm, the temperate will,
Endurance, foresight, strength, and skill;
A perpect woman, nobly plann'd
To warn, to comfort, and command;
And yet a Spirit still, and bright
With something of angelic light
확고한 이성, 절도 있는 의지,
인내심, 통찰력, 힘, 그리고 숙련;
경고하고, 위로하고, 명령하도록
하느님이 설계한 완전한 여인;
그러면서도 여전히 한 정령이며,
무슨 천사 같은 빛으로 환하게 빛나는 여인.
