wish, want, hope의 차이

FAQ 2007. 11. 22. 09:12 Posted by chanyi

◆ I want that he will go. (X)
I hope that he will go. (O)
          ◆ I hope you to go. (X) ↔ I hope to go. (O)
I want you to go. (O)
I wish you to go. (O)

all 과 every의 차이

FAQ 2007. 11. 22. 09:09 Posted by chanyi

all과 every

Every child needs love.
All children need love.

Every light was out.
All lights were out.

All the lights were out.
I've written to all my friends.
I've written to every friends I have.

I like all music.
I like every music.(*)

All London was talking about her affairs.
I've been round all the village looking for the cat.

⑤ all day와 every day는 의미의 차이가 난다. all day는 아침부터 저녁까지를 말하고 every day는 월요일부터 일요일까지를 말한다.

She was here all day.(from morning to night)
She was every day.(Monday, Tuesday,....)

no more than

not more than
no less than
not less than

==============================================================
not은 than 이전까지의 부정....
no는 than 앞, 뒤 모두 부정....
==============================================================

먼저, [not 비교급 than] 과 [no 비교급 than]을 설명합니다.

She is not more beautiful than my girlfriend.

She is no more beautiful than my girlfriend.

==============================================================
결국 [no 비교급 than] 은 [as 반대원급 as] 정도로 볼 수 있습니다.
==============================================================

He is not wiser than you.
He is no wiser than you. = He is as foolish as you.

이것을 [no more than] 에 적용해 보면
He has no more than 100$. [no more than]은 [as 반대원급 as]이니까
He has as few as 100$. He has only 100$.
즉, no more than = only 입니다.

그다음 [not more than] 은 not 은 than 이전까지 부정이니까
He has not more than 100$.
즉 [[[not more than = at most]] 입니다.

그 다음 [no less than]은 no 는 양쪽 부정, 즉 [as 반대원급 as] 이니까
no less than = as much as 가 됩니다.
He has no less than $100.

그 다음 [not less than]은 not 은 than 이전까지 부정이니까
He has not less than $100.
즉, [[not less than = at least]] 가 됩니다.

이것을 [not less 원급 than]과 [no less 원급 than] 에 적용시키면

My girlfriend is not less beautiful than yours.
My girlfriend is at least as beautiful as yours.
즉 [not less 원급 than] 은 [at leat as 원급 as] 정도의 의미입니다.

이제 [no less 원급 than]을 보면
My girlfriend is no less beautiful than yours.
no 은 양쪽 부정이니까, "as (much) 원급 as"의 의미로
My girlfriend is as beautiful as yours.

==============================================================
not more than = at most
no more than = only (노모단지)
not less than = at least
no less than = as much as (노래만큼)
no 비교급 than = as 반대원급 as
no less 원급 than = as 원급 as
not less 원급 than = at least as 원급 as
==============================================================

A is no more B than C is D

A whale is no more a fish than a horse is.
A whale 은 fish가 아니다, horse가 fish가 아니듯이...

see / look (at) / watch

FAQ 2007. 11. 18. 14:43 Posted by chanyi

Suddenly I saw something strange.
Suddenly I looked at something strange.(*)

I looked at the photo. but I didn't see anybody I knew.
He looked at her with his eyes full of love.

Look (at) what you've done!
Look who's here!
Look where you're going.

Watch that man - I want to know everything he does.
I usually watch a football match on Saturday afternoon.

He got into a fight while he was watching a football match.
He got into a fight while he was seeing a football match.(*)

Have you ever seen Chaplin's 'The Great Dictator'?
Have you ever watched Chaplin's 'The Great Dictator'?(*)

You spend too much time watching TV.
We watched/saw a great film on TV last night.
Did you watch/see 'Snow White' on Thursday?

see 다음에는 if나 whether 절이 올 수 있으나 watch나 look 뒤에는 올 수 없다.

See if that suit still fits you.
Look if that suit still fits you.(*)

① 일반적인 사실을 진술하는 문장 뒤에 예외라는 것을 나타내기 위해 except나 except for를 쓴다. all, every no, everything, anything, anybody, nowhere, whole 등의 단어가 온 문장 뒤에 자주 쓰인다.

He ate everything on his plate except (for) the beans.

be worth + 동명사

FAQ 2007. 11. 6. 11:06 Posted by chanyi

ex) This movie is worth seeing. (O)
This movie is worth being seen. (X)
This movie is worth to see. (X)
This movie is worth to be seen. (X)

ex) This movie is worth seeing.
=  It is  worth seeing this movie. (O)
It is worth to see this movie. (X)

affect 와 effect의 차이

FAQ 2007. 10. 31. 12:28 Posted by chanyi

Cares affect the health.
The rise in price affects the living of people.
Cold weather affected everybody's work.

effect an insurance[a policy of insurance] 보험 증권발행시키다, 보험들다
This drug effects a sound sleep.

한편 affect = have an effect on  이 되는데 이때 effect 는 명사로서 " 원인 작용의 결과, 영향" 의 의미로서 have an effect on 은 ...
Cares affect the health. = Cares have an effect on the health.
Cold weather affected everybody's work. = Cold weather has an effect on everybody's work.

if any와 if ever의 구별

if any와 if ever의 구별

* There are few, if any, misprints in her book.

He seldom, if ever, goes to the movies by himself.

a: His dream is to go to Hollywood.

b: He is to go to Hollywood.

(His dream = to go to Hollywood)의 관계가  성립하면 명사적 용법(~것)
주어≠보어(he ≠ to go to Hollywood)이면 be to 용법
