1. root for
To root for is simply to cheer. Perhaps you have a favorite team
or any competition you might choose who is your favorite competitior
and then you root for that person, root for that team, support them.
Yeah, by the way, sometimes this is used not only in sports
perhaps for example a father might say to his son "Well, son
you have a test tomorrow. Okay, I'm rooting for you. Good luck."
▶ root for는 쉽게 말해 격려를 하는 거다. 아마 당신은 좋아하는 팀이나
어떤 경기에서 좋아하는 참가자가 있을 것이다. 그 사람이나 팀을
응원한다(root for)는 것은 그들을 지지한다는 것이다.
그런데 이 표현이 단지 스포츠에만 사용되는 것은 아니다. 예를 들어
아버지가 아들에게 이렇게 말할 수도 있다.
"아들아 내일 시험이 있다면서.. 그래 나는 너를 응원한단다. 힘내."
2. live for
Why? Why do you live? To live for explains, of course, the purpose
for living. However this isn't expression just used for emphasis,
really means I love it so much. Oh, I live for that. It's so important to me.
▶ 왜? 당신은 왜 사는가? 물론 live for는 사는 목적을 설명하는 것이다.
그러나 이 표현은 강조법으로 사용되는 표현은 아니고
정말로 그것을 좋아하는 것을 의미한다. 나는 그것을 위해 산다는 뜻은
그것이 내게 매우 중요하는 것이다.
3. pass for
Ah, pass for, well let's consider first of all some sort of examination,
some sort of testing and if something is able to succeed and
pass the test it is accepted, it is believed, it is trusted.
So if something will pass for, it means whether it's true or not,
whether it's real or not, it is accepted, it is believed.
▶ pass for. 음.. 먼저 어떤 조사나 시험이 성공할 수 있는지
평가가 통과되었는지, 믿을만 하고 신뢰할 수 있는지에 대해
생각해 보자. 그래서 만약 ~으로 통하다(pass for)고
한다면 그것이 사실이든 아니든, 진실이든 아니든 그것은
받아들여지고 믿어지는 것을 의미한다.
