나는 검둥이. 하지만 오 내 영혼은 하얗네
하이얀 천사같이, 영국 어린이의 그것과 같이
그러나 빛을 잃은듯한 나는 검둥이.
My mother taught me underneath a tree,
And sitting down before the heat of day,
She took me on her lap and kissed me,
And pointing to the east, began to say:
나무그늘 아래에서 어머닌 내게 가르치셨지
낮이 뜨거워지기 전 그늘에 앉아
어머니 무릎 위에 날 누이시고 입 맞추어
동쪽을 가리켜 이르시기를
"Look on the rising sunㅡthere God does live,
And gives His light, and gives His heat away;
And flowers and trees and beasts and men reaceive
Comfort in the morning, joy in the noon day.
돋는 해를 보아라ㅡ살아계신 하나님이
그의 빛과 따스함을 내려주시나니
꽃과 나무와 짐승과 사람들까지도
아침에는 위로, 한 낮에 기쁨을 누리도다.
"And we are put on earth a little space,
That we may learn to bear the beams of love;
And this black bodies and this sunburnt face
Is but a cloud, and like a shady grave.
우리는 지상에서 한뙈기 땅을 차지하고
사랑의 빛을 지니도록 배워야 하리니
이 검은 몸과 햇빛에 그을린 얼굴은
한조각의 구름이며 그늘진 무덤일 뿐.
"For when our souls have learned the heat to bear,
The cloud will vanish, we shall hear His voice,
Sounding:Come out from the grave, my love and care,
And round my golden tent like lamb rejoice."
우리의 영혼들이 열 견딤을 배워 왔기에
구름은 사라질 것이고 그의 음성을 들을 수 있어
말하기를 "숲에서 나오라. 나의 사랑 나의 근심
나의 황금 장막에서 양들과 같이 즐겁게 뛰놀거라."
Thus did my mother say, and kissed me;
And thus I say to little English boy,
When I from black, and he from white could free,
And round the tent of God like lamb we joy.
어머닌 그렇게 말하시며 내게 입맞추시었고
나는 지금 또 그렇게 작은 영국 아이에게 말하지
"내가 검은 구름으로부터 자유롭고 그가 흰 구름으로부터 자유로울 때
신의 장막을 어린양들과 같이 뛰노는 우리는 즐거우리."
I'll shade him from the heat, till he can bear
To learn in joy upon our father's knee;
And then I'll stand and stroke his silver hair,
And be like him, he will then love me.
나는 그가 더위를 견디도록 그늘을 드리워주며
아버지의 무릎에 기대어 기뻐하게 하리라;
그리고 나는 서서 그의 은발을 쓰다듬으며
그를 좋아하게 되면 그도 나를 좋아하겠지.
- 이 시에서 첫연에서 알수 있다시피 화자로 하여금 어머니에게서 흑인아이를 데리고 해가 떠오르기 전 나무 그늘에 앉아서 "태양의 뜨거움을 참는 법을 배웠을 때 비로소 어둠이 사라질 것"이라 는 가르침을 배운다. 하지만 태양을 피하기 위해 나무 그늘에 앉아 그런 말을 한다는 것조차 어머니의 모순성을 드러낸다고 볼수 있다. 즉 어머니조차 현실의 고통을 회피하면서(heat of the sun)아이에게는 그것을 직면하고 견뎌내라고 하는 것을 일종의 아이러니인 것이다. 그리고 마지막에 영국 아이와 같아지면 사랑을 얻을수 있다는 말은 완전히 흑인이라는 열등감을 극복한것이 아니라는 것을 보여준다.
