start와 begin의 차이
둘다 <시작하다>는 의미로 동의어로 쓰이는 경우가 많지만 쓰임이 다른 경우도 있습니다. 이 점에 대하여 살펴봅니다.
begin은 어느 과정의 첫 부분을 가리키고, start는 어느 과정의 첫 부분에 앞선 시작 부분을 가리킵니다.
start===>begin===(stop)===>end / finish
He started to get mean (but thought better of it). 그는 비열한 짓을 하려고 하다가 생각을 바꾸었다. 비열한 짓을 하지 않았다.
※ starting은 명사형으로 잘 쓰이지 않습니다. 하지만 beginning은 명사형으로 아주 잘 쓰입니다. in the beginning 태초에
※ 다음의 경우에는 start만 쓰고 begin은 쓸 수 없습니다.
1. 기계나 엔진 시동을 거는 경우
He couldn't get his engine started.
2. 사업체나 조직을 만드는 경우
He scraped up the money to start a restaurant.
3. 여행을 출발하다는 의미일 때(start a journey)
I think we ought to start at six, while the roads are empty.
※ 공식적인 문서(a more formal style)에서는 begin을 선호합니다.
We will begin the meeting with a message from the President.(formal)
Oh no! It's starting to rain.(informal)
