mark up 비싼 값을 매기다, 써넣다

To mark means to make some sort of sign. Now when we talk about buying things and going shopping, every item will have a price tag. On the price tag the cost of the item is marked.

"mark" 는 어떤 표시를 하는 것이다. 우리가 물건을 사고, 쇼핑에 대해서 이야기 할 때, 모든 물건에는 가격표가 있다. 가격표에 물건의 가격이 표시되어 있다.

If some store is going to raise the price, they mark up the price. Obviously to get a discount we mark down the price. Anyway "mark up" is to increase the price of some item. 

가게에서 가격을 올리려고 하면, 그들은 가격을 "mark up" 한다. 분명히 가격을 할인하려면, "mark down" 이다. 어쨌든 "mark up" 은 물건의 가격을 올리는 것이다.    

freshen up (손, 얼굴 등을) 씻다

To freshen means to make fresh. How do we do that? If we're talking about your face, you can wash your face. If we're talking about maybe your clothing, maybe you can adjust, pat yourself down and re-button and re-zipper things.

"freshen" 은 새롭게 하는 것이다. 어떻게 할까? 얼굴에 대해서 이야기 하면, 얼굴을 씻을 수 있다. 옷에 대해서 이야기 하면, 옷매무새를 다듬고, 버튼을 다시하고, 지퍼를 다시 하는 것들이다.   

If we're talking about the salad, anything to make fresh again is to freshen up.  

샐러드에 대해서 이야기하면, 어떤 것이든 다시 새롭게 하는 것이 "freshen up" 이다.     

mess up 엉망으로 만들다, 망치다

To mess up of course means to make a mistake. If you look at your book at the top of page 52, there's a photograph, there Jake's girl friend. When Jake makes a mistake, she messes him up. 

"mess up" 은 실수를 하는 것을 말한다. 책 52 페이지 위에 제이크 여자 친구 사진이 있다. 제이크가 실수하면, 그녀는 그를 엉망으로 만든다.

I don't want to mess up this time. 이번엔 망치고 싶지 않아.

I think we have to mark up the price in order to increase sales. 매출을 늘리려면 가격을 더 올려야 한다고 생각해.

I'd like to freshen up before the meeting. 회의 시작하기 전에 좀 씻고 싶어.

I'd like to freshen up a little bit. (= I have to use the bathroom, Where's the men's room? I've gotta pee.)

The jeans that I wanted to buy are marked down by 15%. 내가 사고 싶던 청바지 가격이 15% 인하됐어.

I have nothing against gum factories but I hate gum, I'm not a gum chewer at all. However in the United States over 2 billion dollars with gum sold each year.

껌에 대해서 반대하는 것은 아니지만 껌을 싫어한다. 껌을 전혀 씹지 않아. 그렇지만 미국에서 매년 20억 달러 이상 팔린다. 

Here's another fact. If you have dried gum from some terrible person who put dried gum under the desk or anywhere at all, you can remove it. 

또 하나의 사실이 있어. 끔찍한 사람이 책상 밑이나 어디든 놓아둔 마른 껌이 있다면, 없앨 수 있다.  

Well, you can put from your hair, you can put peanut butter on it, peanut butter will help you remove gum from your hair. 

머리카락에 껌이 붙어있으면, 땅콩버터를 바르면 껌을 제거 할 수 있다. 

How would you get dried gum in your hair? I don't know how that happens?

어떻게 마른 껌이 머리에 붙지? 어떻게 그렇게 되는지 모르겠어. 

You know, long ago in school days when a student was chewing gum in class, teacher would get angry and tell the student he had to put the gum on his nose.

오래전에는 학교에서 학생이 수업시간에 껌을 씹으면, 선생님은 화를 내고 학생의 코에 붙이게 했다. 

Now these days things have changed. Now teachers are rewarding their good students with by giving them chewing gum.     

요즘에는 세상이 변해서 잘하는 학생들에게 껌을 상으로 준다고 한다.

You know, I'm bored. I'm getting tired of always wearing the same cloths. I need to freshen up my lifestyle a little bit.
