‘We the people, in order to form a more perfect union.’
Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America´s improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

221년 전, 길 건너편 회관에 모인 한 무리의 사람들은 이 단순한 말로, 불가능해 보이는 민주주의 실험을 시작했습니다. 농부와 학자, 정치가와 애국자 등 폭정과 처형을 피해 바다를 건너온 이들이 1787년 봄 필라델피아에서 진정한 독립을 선언한 것입니다.

The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation´s original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least 20 more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.
Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution - a Constitution that had at its very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time.

And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of every color and creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States. What would be needed were Americans in successive generations who were willing to do their part - through protests and struggle, on the streets and in the courts, through a civil war and civil disobedience and always at great risk - to narrow that gap between the promise of our ideals and the reality of their time.

This was one of the tasks we set forth at the beginning of this campaign - to continue the long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America. I chose to run for the presidency at this moment in history because I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together - unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and we may not have come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction - towards a better future for our children and our grandchildren. This belief comes from my unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people. But it also comes from my own American story.

I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton´s Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas. I´ve gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in one of the world´s poorest nations. I am married to a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners - an inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters. I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible.

It´s a story that hasn´t made me the most conventional candidate. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the sum of its parts - that out of many, we are truly one.
Throughout the first year of this campaign, against all predictions to the contrary, we saw how hungry the American people were for this message of unity. Despite the temptation to view my candidacy through a purely racial lens, we won commanding victories in states with some of the whitest populations in the country. In South Carolina, where the Confederate Flag still flies, we built a powerful coalition of African-Americans and white Americans.
이런 사연이 저를 과거의 후보자들과 다르게 만들었습니다. 미국이란 나라가 단지 그 구성원들을 모두 더한 것이 아니라, 진정으로 하나라는 생각을 제 유전인자에 각인했거든요.

This is not to say that race has not been an issue in the campaign. At various stages in the campaign, some commentators have deemed me either “too black” or “not black enough.” We saw racial tensions bubble to the surface during the week before the South Carolina primary. The press has scoured every exit poll for the latest evidence of racial polarization, not just in terms of white and black, but black and brown as well. And yet, it has only been in the last couple of weeks that the discussion of race in this campaign has taken a particularly divisive turn.

On one end of the spectrum, we´ve heard the implication that my candidacy is somehow an exercise in affirmative action, that it´s based solely on the desire of wide-eyed liberals to purchase racial reconciliation on the cheap. On the other end, we´ve heard my former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, use incendiary language to express views that have the potential not only to widen the racial divide, but views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation - that rightly offend white and black alike.
스펙트럼의 한쪽 끝에서는, 나의 출마를 놓고 인종화해를 값싸게 구입하려는 순진한 자유주의자들의 소망에서 비롯된 일종의 차별철폐조처(affirmative action)라는 식의 이야기가 들립니다. 그 반대쪽 끝에서는, 과거 나의 담임목사였던 라이트 목사가 선동적인 언어로 인종분열을 확대할 소지가 있을 뿐 아니라, 미국의 고귀함과 우수성을 모두 훼손함으로써 백인과 흑인을 모두 불편하게 만드는 견해를 피력했습니다.

흑인 인권운동가 마틴 루터 킹 목사의 40주기를 맞아 미국 테네시 주 멤피스의 국립 인권박물관에 그를 추모하는 화환이 걸렸다. 1968년 4월4일 킹 목사는 당시 로레인 모텔이었던 이곳 2층 발코니에 서 있다가 제임스 얼 레이라는 암살자의 총에 맞아 사망했다.
I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Rev. Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely - just as I´m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.
저는 이미 분명한 어조로 라이트 목사의 발언을 비판한 바 있습니다. 그럼에도 여전히 궁금증이 남아 있는 모양입니다. 라이트 목사가 종종 미국의 대내외 정책을 극렬하게 비판한 것을 알고 있었느냐고요? 물론입니다. 라이트 목사가 교회에서 논란이 될 만한 발언을 하는 것을 들은 적 있느냐고요? 그럼요. 그의 정치적 견해에 대해 강력하게 반대하느냐고요? 당연합니다. 여러분이 여러분의 목사나 신부, 랍비가 여러분과 아주 다른 견해를 드러내는 걸 들어본 적이 있는 것처럼 말이죠.
But the remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren´t simply controversial. They weren´t simply a religious leader´s effort to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country - a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is right with America, a view that sees the conflicts in the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam.
하지만 최근의 발언은 단순한 논란거리에 그치지 않고, 감정폭발을 일으켰습니다. 그 발언은 단순히 공공연한 부당함에 대해 공개적으로 비판하려는 한 종교지도자의 노력이 아니었습니다. 이 나라의 심하게 비틀린 시각, 바로 백인우월주의를 지역 특성으로 간주하고, 미국의 잘못을 강조하는 나머지 미국의 옳은 점은 간과하며, 중동 갈등의 원인을 급진적 이슬람세력의 증오로 가득 찬 이데올로기가 아닌 이스라엘과 같은 동맹국의 영향에서 찾는 견해를 드러낸 것입니다.
As such, Rev. Wright´s comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of monumental problems - two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change; problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.
라이트 목사의 발언은 잘못됐을 뿐 아니라, 통합이 필요한 시기에 분열을 초래했습니다. 산적한 문제들을 풀기 위해 우리 모두 힘을 합쳐야 할 때에 인종의식으로 얽매어놓았습니다. 두 번의 전쟁과 테러 위협, 추락하는 경제, 만성적인 건강관리시스템 위기와 심각한 기후변화 같은 문제들은 흑인, 백인, 라틴계, 아시아인 가릴 것 없이 우리 모두가 직면하고 있는 것입니다.
Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Rev. Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Rev. Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and YouTube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way.
저의 성장배경, 정치관, 그리고 가치관과 이상을 두고 본다면, 제 비판이 충분치 않다고 생각하는 분들이 분명 있을 겁니다. 애초에 라이트 목사와 관계를 맺은 이유가 뭐냐고 묻고 싶겠죠? 고백하건대, 제가 라이트 목사에 대해 아는 바가, 텔레비전과 유투브에 끊임없이 떠도는 파편적인 설교 수준이라면, 혹은 일부 논평가가 퍼뜨린 풍자만화에 대해 트리니티 연합교회가 사실이라고 인정한다면, 저도 다른 사람들과 똑같이 반응했을 것입니다.
But the truth is, that isn´t all that I know of the man. The man I met more than 20 years ago is a man who helped introduce me to my Christian faith, a man who spoke to me about our obligations to love one another; to care for the sick and lift up the poor. He is a man who served his country as a U.S. Marine, who has studied and lectured at some of the finest universities and seminaries in the country, and who for over thirty years led a church that serves the community by doing God´s work here on Earth - by housing the homeless, ministering to the needy, providing day care services and scholarships and prison ministries, and reaching out to those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
그러나 진실은, 제가 아는 라이트 목사의 모습은 그게 전부가 아니라는 겁니다. 20년도 더 전에 처음 만난 그 사람은, 저를 기독교 신앙으로 이끌었고, 서로를 사랑하며 약한 자를 보살피고 가난한 자를 돕는 게 우리의 의무임을 일깨워주었습니다. 그는 미 해병대에서 국가를 위해 봉사했고, 최고의 대학과 신학교에서 연구하고 강의했습니다. 30년 넘게 교회를 이끌며 지역사회에 봉사해왔습니다. 노숙자들을 재워주고, 빈곤한 자를 보살피고, 탁아서비스와 장학금 및 교도소 사역을 제공하고, 에이즈로 고통 받는 사람들에게 손을 내미는 등 이곳 지상에서 신의 사역을 실천해왔습니다.
In my first book, “Dreams From My Father,” I described the experience of my first service at Trinity:
“People began to shout, to rise from their seats and clap and cry out, a forceful wind carrying the reverend´s voice up into the rafters … And in that single note - hope! - I heard something else; at the foot of that cross, inside the thousands of churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in the lion´s den, Ezekiel´s field of dry bones. Those stories - of survival, and freedom, and hope - became our story, my story; the blood that had spilled was our blood, the tears our tears; until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. Our trials and triumphs became at once unique and universal, black and more than black; in chronicling our journey, the stories and songs gave us a means to reclaim memories that we didn´t need to feel shame about … memories that all people might study and cherish - and with which we could start to rebuild.”

That has been my experience at Trinity. Like other predominantly black churches across the country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety - the doctor and the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Like other black churches, Trinity´s services are full of raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing, clapping, screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and yes, the bitterness and bias that make up the black experience in America.
트리니티교회에 대한 제 경험은 그랬습니다. 흑인이 많이 다니는 다른 교회와 마찬가지로, 트리니티교회 또한 의사와 생활보조금을 받는 모자가정, 모범생과 과거의 갱단원에 이르기까지 있는 그대로의 흑인공동체를 구현하고 있습니다. 트리니티교회의 예배는 다른 흑인교회와 마찬가지로 요란한 웃음소리로 가득하고, 이따금 다소 외설적인 유머가 가미되기도 합니다. 춤과 박수, 외침과 환호로 가득 차, 여기에 익숙하지 않은 사람들 귀에는 거슬릴 수도 있습니다. 또한 친절과 무자비함, 날카로운 지성과 놀랄 만한 무지, 역경과 성공, 사랑과 긍정, 냉소와 편견이 함께 어우러져 있는데, 모두 흑인이 미국에서 경험하는 것들입니다.
And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Rev. Wright. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and baptized my children. Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. He contains within him the contradictions - the good and the bad - of the community that he has served diligently for so many years.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.
저는 흑인공동체를 버릴 수 없는 것 이상으로 라이트 목사와의 인연을 끊을 수 없습니다. 백인할머니를 버릴 수 없는 것처럼 그를 외면할 수 없습니다. 할머니는 저를 키우셨고, 저를 위해 끊임없이 희생했으며, 저를 세상 그 무엇보다 사랑하는 분입니다. 하지만 할머니는 언젠가 길에서 흑인 남자들이 옆으로 지나가면 무섭다고 털어놨고, 종종 인종적 편견을 드러내서 저를 당혹스럽게 했죠.
These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.
Some will see this as an attempt to justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable. I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing would be to move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into the woodwork. We can dismiss Rev. Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated racial bias.

But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Rev. Wright made in his offending sermons about America - to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.
The fact is that the comments that have been made and the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of race in this country that we´ve never really worked through - a part of our union that we have yet to perfect. And if we walk away now, if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and solve challenges like health care, or education, or the need to find good jobs for every American.
하지만 인종갈등은 지금 이 나라가 무시해도 될 만한 이슈가 아닙니다. 라이트 목사가 미국에 대해 설교하면서 사람들의 감정을 거스른 것과 똑같은 실수를 우리도 저지를 수 있습니다. 상대방을 단순화하고, 정형화하고, 부풀려서, 결국 현실을 왜곡하고 마는 실수를요.

Understanding this reality requires a reminder of how we arrived at this point. As William Faulkner once wrote, “The past isn´t dead and buried. In fact, it isn´t even past.” We do not need to recite here the history of racial injustice in this country. But we do need to remind ourselves that so many of the disparities that exist in the African-American community today can be directly traced to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow.

Segregated schools were, and are, inferior schools; we still haven´t fixed them, fifty years after Brown v. Board of Education, and the inferior education they provided, then and now, helps explain the pervasive achievement gap between today´s black and white students.
Legalized discrimination - where blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted to African-American business owners, or black homeowners could not access FHA mortgages, or blacks were excluded from unions, or the police force, or fire departments - meant that black families could not amass any meaningful wealth to bequeath to future generations. That history helps explain the wealth and income gap between black and white, and the concentrated pockets of poverty that persists in so many of today´s urban and rural communities.
인종 분리 학교들은 열악했고, 지금도 열악합니다. ‘브라운 대 교육위원회’ 사건 판결이 난 지 50년이 지났지만 아직까지 환경이 개선되지 않고 그때나 지금이나 열악한 학교 교육은, 오늘날 흑인 학생과 백인 학생의 성취도 차이를 설명하는 데 도움이 됩니다.

A lack of economic opportunity among black men, and the shame and frustration that came from not being able to provide for one´s family, contributed to the erosion of black families - a problem that welfare policies for many years may have worsened. And the lack of basic services in so many urban black neighborhoods - parks for kids to play in, police walking the beat, regular garbage pick-up and building code enforcement - all helped create a cycle of violence, blight and neglect that continue to haunt us.

This is the reality in which Rev. Wright and other African-Americans of his generation grew up. They came of age in the late fifties and early sixties, a time when segregation was still the law of the land and opportunity was systematically constricted. What´s remarkable is not how many failed in the face of discrimination, but rather how many men and women overcame the odds; how many were able to make a way out of no way for those like me who would come after them.

But for all those who scratched and clawed their way to get a piece of the American Dream, there were many who didn´t make it - those who were ultimately defeated, in one way or another, by discrimination. That legacy of defeat was passed on to future generations - those young men and, increasingly, young women who we see standing on street corners or languishing in our prisons, without hope or prospects for the future. Even for those blacks who did make it, questions of race, and racism, continue to define their world view in fundamental ways. For the men and women of Rev. Wright´s generation, the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and the bitterness of those years. That anger may not get expressed in public, in front of white co-workers or white friends. But it does find voice in the barbershop or around the kitchen table. At times, that anger is exploited by politicians, to gin up votes along racial lines, or to make up for a politician´s own failings.

And occasionally it finds voice in the church on Sunday morning, in the pulpit and in the pews. The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Rev. Wright´s sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning. That anger is not always productive; indeed, all too often it distracts attention from solving real problems; it keeps us from squarely facing our own complicity in our condition, and prevents the African-American community from forging the alliances it needs to bring about real change. But the anger is real; it is powerful; and to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races.

In fact, a similar anger exists within segments of the white community. Most working- and middle-class white Americans don´t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race. Their experience is the immigrant experience - as far as they´re concerned, no one´s handed them anything, they´ve built it from scratch. They´ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pension dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and feel their dreams slipping away; in an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense. So when they are told to bus their children to a school across town; when they hear that an African-American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed; when they´re told that their fears about crime in urban neighborhoods are somehow prejudiced, resentment builds over time.
사실 이와 유사한 노여움이 백인 사회 일부에도 존재합니다. 대부분의 백인 중산-노동자계층은 자신들이 인종적 혜택을 받아왔다고 느끼지 않습니다. 그들의 삶은 이민자의 삶입니다. 아무도 그들에게 유산을 남겨주지 않았으며, 순전히 무에서 유를 창조했습니다. 그들은 평생 열심히 일했지만, 많은 경우 자신의 일터가 해외로 빠져나가거나, 평생 일해서 모은 연금이 헐값이 되는 걸 목격했습니다. 그들은 미래를 걱정하며, 자신의 꿈이 미끄러져 나가버리는 것을 느낍니다. 동결된 임금과 세계 경쟁으로 인해, 기회는 제로섬 게임으로 비칩니다. 남의 성공은 곧 나의 희생을 대가로 한다고 보는 거죠. 그리하여 자녀를 멀리 떨어진 학교에 버스 태워 보내야 할 때, 좋은 직장을 얻고 좋은 학교에 들어가는 데 흑인에게 혜택이 주어진다는 소식을 들을 때, 그리고 도시 주택가 범죄에 대한 두려움이 선입관에 기인한다는 얘기를 들을 때, 그들에게 분노가 쌓입니다.

Like the anger within the black community, these resentments aren´t always expressed in polite company. But they have helped shape the political landscape for at least a generation. Anger over welfare and affirmative action helped forge the Reagan Coalition. Politicians routinely exploited fears of crime for their own electoral ends. Talk show hosts and conservative commentators built entire careers unmasking bogus claims of racism while dismissing legitimate discussions of racial injustice and inequality as mere political correctness or reverse racism.
흑인사회의 분노와 마찬가지로, 백인사회 일부의 이런 분노 역시 교양 있는 모임에서는 잘 표출되지 않습니다. 그러나 이러한 분노는 적어도 한 세대의 정치적 지형을 만들어내는 데 기여했습니다. 복지와 차별철폐조처에 대한 노여움은 레이건 연대 형성에 일조했습니다. 정치인들은 선거에서 이길 목적으로 공공연하게 범죄에 대한 두려움을 강조했습니다. 토크쇼 진행자들과 보수논객들은 인종차별과 부당성에 대한 정당한 토론조차 단순히 정치적 신중함이나 역인종차별이라고 깎아내림으로써 명성을 쌓았습니다.

Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle-class squeeze - a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many. And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns - this too widens the racial divide, and blocks the path to understanding.

This is where we are right now. It´s a racial stalemate we´ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naive as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy - particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.
But I have asserted a firm conviction - a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in the American people - that working together we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and that in fact we have no choice if we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union.

For the African-American community, that path means embracing the burdens of our past without becoming victims of our past. It means continuing to insist on a full measure of justice in every aspect of American life. But it also means binding our particular grievances - for better health care, and better schools, and better jobs - to the larger aspirations of all Americans, the white woman struggling to break the glass ceiling, the white man whose been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family. And it means taking full responsibility for own lives - by demanding more from our fathers, and spending more time with our children, and reading to them, and teaching them that while they may face challenges and discrimination in their own lives, they must never succumb to despair or cynicism; they must always believe that they can write their own destiny.
미국 흑인들에게 있어, 통합으로 향하는 길은 과거의 제물이 되지 않으면서 과거의 짐을 포용하는 것입니다. 곧 미국인 삶의 모든 측면에서 정의를 실현할 온전한 조처들을 끊임없이 주장해야 하는 것입니다. 그러면서 한편으로 각자의 욕구, 이를테면 더 나은 건강보험, 더 좋은 학교와 직장 같은 개개인의 바람 모든 미국인, 그러니까 유리천장을 뚫고자 하는 백인 여성, 실직한 백인 남성, 가족을 먹여 살리려는 이민자를 포함한 모든 미국인의 보다 큰 염원과 결부시켜야 합니다. 이는 다시 우리가 각자의 삶에 온전한 책임을 져야 함을 뜻합니다. 부모에게 더욱 헌신하고, 자녀에게 더 많은 시간을 내어 책을 읽어주면서 말입니다. 그 뿐만 아니라, 살면서 역경과 차별에 맞닥뜨리더라도 절대 절망하거나 냉소해서는 안 되며, 누구나 자신의 운명을 개척할 수 있음을 믿어야 한다고 아이들에게 가르쳐야 합니다.
Ironically, this quintessentially American - and yes, conservative - notion of self-help found frequent expression in Reverend Wright´s sermons. But what my former pastor too often failed to understand is that embarking on a program of self-help also requires a belief that society can change.
The profound mistake of Rev. Wright´s sermons is not that he spoke about racism in our society. It´s that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress has been made; as if this country - a country that has made it possible for one of his own members to run for the highest office in the land and build a coalition of white and black, Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old - is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past. But what we know - what we have seen - is that America can change. That is the true genius of this nation. What we have already achieved gives us hope - the audacity to hope - for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.
아이러니하게도 이런 전형적인 미국식, 그렇죠, 보수적인 자립 개념이 라이트 목사의 설교에 자주 등장합니다. 그러나 과거 나의 담임목사였던 그가 늘 이해하지 못했던 것이 하나 있습니다. 자립 프로그램을 시작하려면, 사회가 변할 수 있다는 믿음이 전제되어야 한다는 점입니다. 라이트 목사 설교의 심각한 문제점은 인종주의에 대해 언급했다는 사실이 아니라, 마치 우리 사회가 변하지 않는 것처럼 말한 점입니다. 마치 진보가 없었던 것처럼, 자신의 신자가 대통령선거에 출마해 백인, 흑인, 라틴계, 아시아인, 부자와 가난한 자, 젊은이와 노인의 연대를 구축하고 있는데도 이 나라가 여전히 비극적인 과거에서 헤어나지 못하고 있는 것처럼 말한 게 잘못입니다. 우리가 알고 있고, 우리가 눈으로 확인하듯 미국은 변할 수 있습니다. 그것이 미국의 진정한 능력입니다. 우리가 이미 이루어낸 것들이 우리에게 희망을 주고, 앞으로 우리가 이룰 수 있으며 이뤄내야만 하는 것들에 대해 희망할 수 있도록 담대함을 줍니다.
In the white community, the path to a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination - and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past - are real and must be addressed. Not just with words, but with deeds - by investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations. It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper.
보다 완전한 통합으로 이르는 길이 백인에겐, 흑인들을 괴롭히는 것이 단지 흑인의 마음속에만 존재하는 인종차별의 유산이 아님을 깨닫는 걸 의미합니다. 과거만큼 노골적이진 않지만 차별이 분명 존재하고, 처리되어야 한다는 걸 인식해야 합니다. 말만이 아니라 실천이 뒷받침되어야 합니다. 학교와 지역사회에 투자하고, 인권법을 강화하고, 사법시스템의 공정성을 확보함으로써 앞선 세대가 누리지 못한 기회의 사다리를 현 세대에게는 제공해야 합니다. 그러기 위해선 모든 미국인이, 네가 꿈을 이룬다고 해서 내가 희생되는 건 아니며, 흑인, 갈색인, 백인 아이들을 위한 건강과 복지, 교육에 대한 투자가 궁극적으로는 미국 전체의 번영으로 이어질 것임을 깨달아야 합니다.
In the end, then, what is called for is nothing more, and nothing less, than what all the world´s great religions demand - that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us be our brother´s keeper, scripture tells us. Let us be our sister´s keeper. Let us find that common stake we all have in one another, and let our politics reflect that spirit as well.
결국, 우리에게 요구되는 것은, 세계의 위대한 종교들이 강조했던, ‘남에게 대접받고자 하는 대로 남을 대접하라’ 그 이상도 이하도 아닙니다. 성서에 씌어 있는 것처럼, 우리 형제의 파수꾼이 됩시다. 우리 자매의 파수꾼이 됩시다. 우리 모두가 공유하는 공통의 바람을 찾아서, 우리 정치가 그것을 반영하도록 합시다.
For we have a choice in this country. We can accept a politics that breeds division, and conflict, and cynicism. We can tackle race only as spectacle - as we did in the O.J. trial - or in the wake of tragedy, as we did in the aftermath of Katrina - or as fodder for the nightly news. We can play Rev. Wright´s sermons on every channel, every day and talk about them from now until the election, and make the only question in this campaign whether or not the American people think that I somehow believe or sympathize with his most offensive words. We can pounce on some gaffe by a Hillary supporter as evidence that she´s playing the race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies.
우리에겐 선택권이 있습니다. 우리는 분열과 갈등, 냉소주의를 키우는 정치를 수용할 수도 있습니다. O. We can do that.
But if we do, I can tell you that in the next election, we´ll be talking about some other distraction. And then another one. And then another one. And nothing will change. That is one option.
Or, at this moment, in this election, we can come together and say, “Not this time.” This time we want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children and white children and Asian children and Hispanic children and Native American children. This time we want to reject the cynicism that tells us that these kids can´t learn; that those kids who don´t look like us are somebody else´s problem. The children of America are not those kids, they are our kids, and we will not let them fall behind in a 21st century economy. Not this time.

This time we want to talk about the fact that the real problem is not that someone who doesn´t look like you might take your job; it´s that the corporation you work for will ship it overseas for nothing more than a profit.

I would not be running for president if I didn´t believe with all my heart that this is what the vast majority of Americans want for this country. This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected. And today, whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical about this possibility, what gives me the most hope is the next generation - the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history in this election.

There is one story in particularly that I´d like to leave you with today - a story I told when I had the great honor of speaking on Dr. King´s birthday at his home church, Ebenezer Baptist, in Atlanta.
There is a young, 23-year-old white woman named Ashley Baia who organized for our campaign in Florence, South Carolina. She had been working to organize a mostly African-American community since the beginning of this campaign, and one day she was at a roundtable discussion where everyone went around telling their story and why they were there.
오늘 특별히 여러분께 남기고 싶은 얘기가 있습니다. 마틴 루터 킹 목사 생일에 애틀랜타에 있는 그의 교회본당에서 연설한 내용이기도 합니다.

And Ashley said that when she was 9 years old, her mother got cancer. And because she had to miss days of work, she was let go and lost her health care. They had to file for bankruptcy, and that´s when Ashley decided that she had to do something to help her mom.
She knew that food was one of their most expensive costs, and so Ashley convinced her mother that what she really liked and really wanted to eat more than anything else was mustard and relish sandwiches. Because that was the cheapest way to eat.

She did this for a year until her mom got better, and she told everyone at the roundtable that the reason she joined our campaign was so that she could help the millions of other children in the country who want and need to help their parents, too.
Now Ashley might have made a different choice. Perhaps somebody told her along the way that the source of her mother´s problems were blacks who were on welfare and too lazy to work, or Hispanics who were coming into the country illegally. But she didn´t. She sought out allies in her fight against injustice.
애슐리는 엄마의 병이 나을 때까지 1년 동안 그렇게 했습니다. 그녀는 토론회에 참석한 사람들에게, 자신이 선거운동에 동참한 이유는 자신처럼 부모를 돕고 싶고, 또 도와야만 하는 수백만의 어린이를 도울 수 있을 것 같았기 때문이라고 말했습니다.

Anyway, Ashley finishes her story and then goes around the room and asks everyone else why they´re supporting the campaign. They all have different stories and reasons. Many bring up a specific issue. And finally they come to this elderly black man who´s been sitting there quietly the entire time. And Ashley asks him why he´s there. And he does not bring up a specific issue. He does not say health care or the economy. He does not say education or the war. He does not say that he was there because of Barack Obama. He simply says to everyone in the room, “I am here because of Ashley.”

“I´m here because of Ashley.” By itself, that single moment of recognition between that young white girl and that old black man is not enough. It is not enough to give health care to the sick, or jobs to the jobless, or education to our children.
But it is where we start. It is where our union grows stronger. And as so many generations have come to realize over the course of the two-hundred and twenty one years since a band of patriots signed that document in Philadelphia, that is where the perfection begins.
