Hard work will pay off in the end.

She said no kissing until I shave off my beard.

1. pay off

Um, to pay, of course, refers to giving money. However sometimes we might receive

a benefit that is not money. We might develop our skills, we might improve in some way.

To pay off is to give some sort of a benefit.

So if you shave off a beard, you shave off a mustache, simply you're removing it,

cutting it off.

3. scare off

Woo, very frightening word, scare, we know the verb scare means to give someone

a bad feeling, give someone a fright, to make someone run away

because they're afraid with them. In that case, we will use this expression 'to scare off'

basically making someone leave, get out of here, go away. Scare off.

John's Recap

Wow, you know I'm not sure radio was a good place to tell the story.

It's kind of a private story about my friend. His name is Jake. In fact, he had a very big

beard and mustache and so he was having a hard time finding a date.

I told him, "You've got to shave off that beard. You're scaring off all the girl

with that beard. I promise if you shave off that beard and shave off that mustache,

go ahead, shave off that hair on your head, too. I'm sure to pay off.

You'll have a lot more date. So I think he's gonna do it.

You might think "Wow, James Bond drives a nice car. I wanna be spy". The truth is, it's hardly than it looks. Nurses in fact, in the United States are very unhappy about the image they have television shows and movies. They are not very happy with what's happening in Hollywood.

(cheat, overcharge)

A street vendor might rip off a tourist if he can.

2. shoot off : 보내다, 전송하다 (send)

Shoot off a text when you get the time.

3. switch off : (스위치 등을 눌러서) 끄다 (turn off)

Last one out, switch off the lights.

1. rip off
Rip off. Again the word R I P, we know, has ths feeling of very fast action,

but the word rip off, in fact, means to steal from someone or to cheat someone

maybe even for overcharge.

2. shoot off

Ah, yeah, shoot. Well, you're taking a picture with your camera or firing a gun,

both of these use the word shoot. What does that mean?

To do something very quickly. To shoot off, then, is to perhaps send something very quickly.

perhaps an e-mail or a letter or a text message. Shoot off a text to me.

3. switch off

Ah yeah well, think about this, switch. When you enter a room and the room is very dark. What is the first

thing you look for? You might look for a switch on the wall and then

you will switch on the light and when, of course, you're leaving the room

you wil switch off the light. So think of using the switch to turn on or turn off the light,

as a way, of course, seeing or saving energy, use the expression sometimes

switch on and switch off.

John's Recap
You know, these days 길동's in a bad mood. First of all 민희 shut down his proposal

and then some bills came in the mail. His electric bill was very high.

He thought something's wrong. So he wrote a long e-mail to the electric company.

He said "I think you people are trying to rip off me on this deal.

I'm paying too much for my electric bill." He shot off the e-mail to them

and he waited a few days. Finally they were abele to shoot off an e-mail back to him.

Very simple, one line in their e-mail to 길동. They said "Mr. Swithc off your lights.

Save money." Yeah, so, now he's walking around in his house in the dark with a candle.

April 30, 2010 Fri      <Opening>

It’s the last of April. Some people feel if they’ve been studying very hard and trying their best. At the same time some people might have a little regret if they have been a little bit tired, a little bit lazy. I’m very great for my past and I’m positive about the future

The first thing you need when you start swimming lessons is a lot of water. You have to count on the water. You have to count on yourself and you have to have some faith and pretty soon you will be floating alone, enjoy the nice swim

1. pull out

To pull out. Well, let's think about this for a moment. A car or a truck is very very heavy.

It's difficult to move. The word 'pull' really does imply that something takes

strenghth and power. To pull out then when referring to driving means to

begin moving that heavy car, get it going up to speed, join the flow of traffice,

start moving.

2. duck out

Ah, duck well we know what a duck is. Ducks are very delicious of course.

However duck as a verb means to lower your head. You can imagine that

if you're very tall you need to go through a small doorway, you'll have to

duck your head, duck your body. Then to duck out means to kind of quietly.

Maybe even sneaking a little bit to go out quickly and quietly.

3. stay out

Well, we know the word 'stay' means to maintain or remain or continue.

So to stay out then simply don't go in, sty out, spend a lot of time outside.

John's Recap

"길동아~" Has anybody seen 길동? He disappeared. He said that he was just gonna

duck out for a few minutes and get a breath of fresh air, but he disappeared.

I guessed he decided to stay out. I took a look in the parking lot. His car was no there.

I guessed he pulled out and went for a ride. Who knows when he's coming back.

I hope he doesn't stay out all night.

in the garbage can and stealing my food and I was angry and scolding him.

길동 told me "John you'd better watch out. If you always chew out Domino

for every mistake, he'll grow to hate you. So it's better to praise him.

Bring out the good thing that he does and make him feel like a better dog.

I'm trying. I'm trying to be a good dog owner to Domino, but a message to Domino.

<LST: The change of the meaning “fizzle”>

This is a very old word. “Fizzle” dates back to the early 1500s, at that time it meant to

break wind without making noise” and later the word fizzle is applied to hissing noises

and then it was used to attain any kind of endeavor or effort and ended the

disappointment.

<John’s Recap>

Do you remember several years ago, Hong Gil-dong was playing basketball? He was on a pro team. He worked very hard. He did his best. During the games, he would get very tired.

I understand on the end of the game, he would fizzle out because he was always maxing out his all energy, running out up and down the court, jumping and shooting. It’s very difficult.

As he would fizzle out, I say “Do you want to sit down and take a break?” No, don’t count out a champion. I’ll fight to the end. He’d always say that. He’s always stayed in the game to the very end

1. back out :  뒤로 빠지다, 철회하다 (quit, cancel)
Once you sign a contract, you can't back out.
2. bottom out : 바닥을 치다, 밑바닥까지 떨어지다 (rach a low point)
Investors are waiting for the economy to bottom out.
3. cross out : 줄을 그어 지우다 (draw a cancelling line through)
Just cross out my name and put it yours.

1. back out
Yes, to back out, we know the verb 'back' means to move to the rear,
to go backwards. To back out something then is to try to get away from it,
perhaps even cancel.

※ 'chicken out' is to be afraid
'cop out' is to provide some excuse
    'back out' is to cancel

2. bottom out

Oh, my. Well if we can imagine that the top is the best, then we can understand
the bottom is the worst. To bottom out then is to reach the bottom,
to hit the bottom ,to be at a low or very bad point.

3. cross out

Ah, to cross out. Cross as a verb means to draw a line through. So it doesn't mean to cancel, but perhaps using your pen or pencil on a piece of paper or a calendar to say "Um, Nope, not gonna do that one that one's cancelled." and you actually draw a line through it.

John's Recap
Jake, recently I got some economic advice from our very good friend 홍길동  and he told me that he had invested money in the stock market,
but most of the companies he invested in bottomed out. Oh very disappointing.
He lost a lot of money he was gonna cross out a lot of those companies from his portfolio but then he decided "No no no. It's a bad time to back out.
Wait, wait and wait. And some day those companies might recover and he might recover his money so even though things bottomed out he's waiting. Hopefully things will be okay.
