seriously.

Our plane is going to touch down in just a few minutes and you’re still eating

your lunch. What are you doing? So Gil-dong said oh, I’m sorry and you wash

down
this chicken or beef

With this clean water and we can get back to business hopefully on this trip to

pull down some good money so I will see how business goes.

<Morning words>

He might say I should’ve married long ago. Now I’m so old. Who can be my partner? Oscar Wild said this. A pessimist is one who when he has a choice of two evils, chooses both.

Jot down: simply writing down something or take notes very quickly >

Bear down: apply a lot of strength, use a greatest power, put your all efforts >

Hang down: being free, not being constrained, loosely not in a hurry >

Ex)

Let me jot down your number and email address

> 당신 전화번호와 이 메일 주소 좀 적을게요

Bear down it doesn’t move a smidgeon >

*smidgeon: very small amount, even in a little bit > 아주 극 소량

I like your look when you let your hair hang down

> 난 네가 머리 늘어뜨린 모습이 좋더라

<More expressions>

Not one jot of something: Not even a little bit >

Bear fruit: provide some results >

Hang a right: make a right turn >

There’s not one jot of money to buy this > 이거 살 돈이 한 푼도 없어

Finally we bear fruit on the project >

Hang a right and you will find the building >

<LST: Bear down Arizona>

“Bear down” it’s the model, the official model of the University of Arizona. It’s also the inspiration for ‘Bear down Arizona” it’s the unofficial fight song for the school’s Arizona football team, ‘the Wild Cats’

<John’s recap>

I had a very funny experience with Gil-dong the other day. We were sitting in a movie theater. We were up in the balcony.

Suddenly Gil-dong saw a girl that he thought was very cute and he said, John I want to meet that girl. I want to give my phone number. What can I do?

We had a great idea. We got a long piece of paper and he wanted to jot down his phone number. Unfortunately his pen was almost out of ink.

He really had to bear down on the pen to finally write his number. Then he was able to hang down the piece of paper from the balcony to the globe below her.

She didn’t see it for a while. The lights were out during the movie and some guy found it. Some guy pulled the paper down and out. Disappointing experience

<Screen:

A: You’ve got to stop talking about that > 그런 얘기 그만해

B: I can’t even think about someone hurting you

> 누가 널 해칠 수 있으리라 생각도 못 했어

A: The only thing that can hurt me is you and I don’t have anything else to be afraid of

> 나를 해칠 수 있는 유일한 사람은 너이고 그 외엔 아무것도 두렵지 않아

B: That’s not true >

A: Victoria, she will come for me one day > Victoria,

<Pops: There goes my baby-Usher->

I’ve been waiting all day /to wrap my hands/ around your waist/ and kiss your face

> 난 내 손이 당신 어깨를 감싸고 얼굴에 키스를 하기 위해 하루 종일 기다려 왔죠

Wouldn’t trade this feeling for nothing/ not even for a minute

1. crack down : 엄히 단속하다, 탄압하다 (severly enforce the law)

The police need to crack down on drunk drivers.

2. play down : ~을 최소화하다 (minimize, make light of)

Al is trying to play down his involvement.

3. dumb down : (이해하기 쉽게) 단순화하다 (speak in simple terms)

Computer geeks need to dumb down to talk to me.

1. crack down

2. play down

Well, we did mention several times already the word 'play' simply implies how you behave

or what your action's all about. To play down, then, is to try to make something

seem to be less important than it is, by your actions, by your speaking to make

something feel weaker or less minimum.

3. dumb down

Ah, well, I know that you are all very intelligent, you all have very high I.Q.

What happens if you meet a little child or you meet someone who doesn't understand

what you're saying. Perhaps you have to change your style of speaking,

change your vocabulary. So that people can understand you better.

You probably wouldn't talk about nuclear science to three-year-old child.

You have to dumb down, bring your leve down to a level that is understandable.

John's Recap

Oh, recently, Jake, I had a very serious conversation with 홍길동.

The fact is he was not behaving very well. He was breaking rules and he was not being

very mannerly. I tried to explain to him about the history of culture and tradition.

But he pretended not to know what I was talking about.

So, okay, okay, I decided to dumb down. If you wanna play down your actions,

I said "Well, then, let me put it very simply. If you do not behave like a good guy,

I'm gonna crack down on you and you're no longer gonna be able to sleep in this house.

You'll have no more food. That'll be the end of it."

By the way, update. He is behaving much better now. Good guy again.

tie down : ~을 얽어매다, 구속하다(inhibit, prevent), write down : (기억, 기록을 위해)~을 적다(put on paper)

run down : 얼른 갔다오다(go to)

step 1

settle down : (결혼해서)자리잡다(get married)

Settle, you know, Jake, we've often said many of these expression!s have more than one meaning, more than one definition. We try to focus on one at a time. So today let's focus on 'settle down' meaning 'get married'. Stop running around, stop dating a lot of different people, calm down, focus, settle down.

water down : ~에 물을타서 희석시키다(make weak of mild)

Ah, water down, let's think for a moment. Perhaps you're in the kitchen and you're making some food, maybe you're gonna make some 찌게. So you test it. Oh, it's a little bit salty or a little bit strong. What do you do? You add water. Why? Water will make things a little bit thinner, weaker. So water down means to make things weaker, not so strong.

take down : ~을 끄집어 내리다(remove from hanging on the wall)

Ah, to take down again, another expression! with many meanings. Let's focus on this one. To remove from a high place, take down a book from the shelf, take down a picture from the wall, take down, remove from a high place.

step 2

1. The time has come to settle down and raisekids.

3. Take down the clock and change the battery.

 ■ More Expression!s ■

* settle one's stomach : 속을 달래다.   * spend money like water : 돈을 물처럼 쓰다.

* That takes care of that : 그것으로 끝이다, 정리되다, 해결되다.

1. A cup of tea could settle my stomach.

2. 민희 spends money like water.

3. That takes care of that, and I'm glad it's over.

John's Recap. ■

You know, for those of you who are very romantic and you have a burning heart and you are desiring to settle down, perhaps the first thing you can do is (to) look at the calendar. Take down a calendar from the wall and start looking to make some goals and make some plans. Don't water down your plans. Be very specific. Say! all right, bye this time, I would like to fall in love. I would like to get married. Settle down, enjoy life with family.

Screen English ■

18 is a little young to start worying about that.

Edward : Bell, your birth is definitely something to celebrate.

Bella : Yeah, but my aging's not.

Edward : Your aging? I think 18 is a little young to start worrying about that.

Bella : It's one year older than you.

Edward : No, it isn't. I'm 109.

Bella : Maybe I shouldn't be dating such an old man.. It's gross.

Edward :

Bella :

Well, perhaps GMPers will remember when we talked about the idea of 'sell off'

meaning sell everything. Well, very similarly 'buy off' means to buy everything

to buy completely everything in stock. Buy off.

We often hear this in business as well when one team, one side or one person

John's Recap

You know, it's been a while since I had the chance to go visit 홍길동 up at his 번데기 restaurant. I went there just see what's going on and I noticed he had normal 번데기 to sell. Previously a customer came in and decided to buy off everything.

He was able to buy off every item on the list. Well, I thought that will make 길동 happy, but he was in a huff. He was in a huff. I told him, "Hey, shrug off this small problem.

You made a good business today." And he said, "No, I need more 번데기 right now."

He stormed off out the door. I was left alone in the restaurant. It was a very unusual moment. He's a sensitive guy.

(initiate)

Somebody bumped my car and set off the alarm.

If you don't pay the bill, they'll cut off your phone.

3. blow off : (계획된 일을) 안 하기로 하다, 농땡이치다 (not go to, not do)

There's a chance I'll blow off class today.

1. set off

Set off, we know, when we set an alarm, we're preparing for an alarm to ring.

We have all kinds of alarms. Don't we have alarm clocks? Car alarms, fire alarms,

even our own emotions and feelings can be set off. So to set off means to begin

warning sounds.

2. cut off

Oh, yes, of course, to cut off, well, we have connections all around us, don't we?

Connection to the Internet, cable TV, our cell phones.

We are connected in many ways. However sometimes that connection is broken,

in that case we're disconnected or we're cut off.

3. blow off

Well, now, very interesting expression 'to blow off' simply means to cancel

but not cancel just not show up, not really care about something,

so don't do it, just forget about it.

John's Recap

You know, these days almost every car has some sort of alarm safety feature.

Unfortunately somebody can accidentally set off your alarm. It might happen enough

that you begin not to care about it. You just blow it off. You might hear your alarm of

your car being set off and you think 'Oh man, I'm not getting my shoes on and

going down to check to my car, just blow it off, forget about it.

You might be surprised someday. Someone might steal your car.

So I don't recommend you cut off your alarm system. Don't do that. Don't blow if off either.

If you hear your alarm being set off, check it out.
